In last week’s post, I discussed the hallmarks of a child ready for kindergarten. If your child isn’t ready, relax, August is still several months away. Or maybe you have a two year old, and you wonder how to begin preparing him so he will be ready for kindergarten. One of you has more time than the other but otherwise the path is the same.

With enrollment season for most schools upon us (Trinitas included), I hear a lot of questions from young parents who are trying to determine if their children are ready for kindergarten. Of course, there is no one-size-fits all answer to that question. Standards for public schools are usually very different than standards for private schools, for example, but to complicate matters further, standards also vary widely among private schools. So how do we define kindergarten-ready at Trinitas?

The parent of a senior shared this story with me this week. The scene – after school; the student has something in a plastic bag.

Parent: “Whatcha got?”

Student: “Oh. That’s my… robe and……… helmet.” (Cap and gown)

Parent: “Classically trained, indeed.”
